The public defense by visual artist Riccardo Giacconi of the research project entitled 'The Variational Mode: Three cases about documents, artworks and animation' consists of two parts. On 13 November at 12.00 Giacconi will publicly elucidate his artistic work for the doctoral examination committee in the exhibition 'The Variational Mode'. At 16.15 on the same day Giacconi will defend his dissertation in the Senate Chamber of Leiden University.
Giacconi researches particular historical documents and, more specifically, explores their narrative potential. In his dissertation, Giacconi argues that in order to investigate their latent stories, documents need to be used in a specific way. This argumentation resonates in his artistic work through which he conceives an alternative mode of existence of documents.
