Research summary

Territoriality and Choreography in Site-Specific Practice

k.g. Guttman’s research project examines the site-specific event within the field of installation art and choreographic practices. As a performing artist, an experimental and performative use of Guttman's own bodily presence embedded within a site is central to her research.

 

Biography

k.g. Guttman is a settler Canadian visual artist working in choreography, video, performance, and installation. Born in 1975, she is based in Tiohtiá:ke/ Montreal.

Guttman holds both a BFA and MFA from Concordia University, Tiohtiá:ke/ Montreal in Interdisciplinary Performance and Studio Arts. In 2006 she was a visiting student at DAS Theatre, a Master’s Programme at Amsterdam University of the Arts.

Guttman’s role as an educator is intertwined with her artistic practices. From 2008-2013. k.g. was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Contemporary Dance, Concordia University, and in 2015 she taught in the photography department at the Royal Academy of Art in the Hague. She was an invited tutor for the Masters of Fine Arts in Scenography, University of the Arts, Utrecht, and has been a guest teacher in Toronto’s professional dance collective the ‘Love-in’.

Diverse invitations that bridge dance and visual art contexts include exhibitions at TPW Gallery and Blackwood Gallery in Toronto, VIVA! Art action and Dazibao, Tiohtiá:ke/ Montreal, Musée d’Art de Joliette, Klupko, Amsterdam, Galerie Khiasma and Palais de Tokyo, Paris. Her choreographic residencies and commissions include l’Agora de la Danse and Tangente, Montreal, the Canada Dance Festival, Dancemakers, Toronto, LeGroupe Dance Lab, Ottawa, the University of Sonora, Mexico, Buda Kunstencentrum, Kortrijk and Pointe Ephémère, Paris.

Her performance publication ‘Elapse I & II’, was launched at Art Metropole and Galerie LaCentrale, and is included in the collection of the Library and Archives of the National Gallery of Canada.
